From Episode 2: The Chicken Manure Incident
Why did it take an atheist?
The problem of homelessness is as old as society itself and in the 21st century, we like to think that it's a problem we should have solved by now, especially in a 1st world country like Canada.
The reality is quite different. Homelessness is actually on the rise in our major cities and places like Abbotsford haven't escaped it. Although the technology, psychology and overall science to help the less fortunate has evolved, the political will to "help thy neighbour" in Abbotsford has virtually stayed the same since Ancient Rome.
Just about every conversation out there starts with a familiar: " oh I'd really like to help solve this problem but..." And then the excuses come rolling in, everything from - they don't want to be helped
-it's too costly and we don't have the money
-it's really the government's fault
Add to that the occasional study to solve the problem tossed out in order to score points with potential voters
And the entire gamut of political ideology comes in resulting in lots of talk, little to no concrete action. People still suffering. Repeat process later.
Einstein did say that the definition of insanity is repeating the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
So either the people of Abbotsford are insane or they simply don't want to help the homeless.
Judging by the sad saga of the chicken manure incident still playing out, the latter is my hypothesis. But here's the kicker
Abbotsford is known as the buckle of the Bible Belt of BC! There are numerous denominations of Christianity represented in Abby which holds more churches per capita than anywhere else in the country!
And last I checked, the Christian god: a humanist and humble Jewish carpenter that preached "(quote) Give to everyone who begs from you; and of him who takes away your goods do not ask them again. And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them." And " Take care of the least of these" (unquote)
Seems to me that good old Abbotsford isn't listening.
So while the politicians are debating in endless committees, businesses are holding on to their cash and the faithful are praying for mana from heaven, it took an...gasp!...ATHEIST and a street preacher in a van to see beyond their differences and come up with a solution.
A man made solution for a man made problem.
These men have showed the way, if Abbotsford's residents really care about their street neighbour as ordered by their deity, they will pull together and this will be resolved before the end of the year.
If not we will truly know what Abbotsford worships: the almighty dollar
